Optimum Nutrition 100% Casein Protein Choc, 2-pound Tub

- Serving Size – 1 scoop
Product Description
Sometimes slower is better – especially when it comes to the rate of protein digestion. While rapid protein absorption is desirable immediately before or after exercise, delayed release is probably more beneficial throughout the remainder of the day.
Casein proteins are pH sensitive and gel in the acidic environment of the stomach. As a result, it can take more than twice as long for caseins to be broken-down into their amino acid subcomponents than whey and other proteins. Because of their unique time-released qualities, caseins are aptly described as anti-catabolic or muscle-protecting proteins.

Absolutely horrible taste, and I’ve consumed a lot of protein in my life. This stuff ranks as the worst. Their whey tastes a lot better.

I got this because my whey smoothies aren’t very filling and I wanted something to help make them a little more substantial. Casein is slower digesting than whey so it seemed like a good choice.
My smoothie is now 2 bananas, 1 cup of ice, 1 cup of skim milk, 1 scoop of chocolate mint whey (same brand as this) and 1 scoop of chocolate peanut butter casein.
Mint and peanut butter you say? Well… I tried the regular chocolate whey and I thought it tasted like a chocolate sticker (scratch and sniff from childhood) smells, you know, really fake. The chocolate mint is a more mellow flavor. And, for whatever reason, it works with the chocolate peanut butter casein. By mixing the whey with the casein I get some fast protein and some slow protein and a more balanced amino acid profile.
I do make my smoothie with a blender, and I can tell that the casein does not dissolve as readily as the whey. I typically have the smoothie going at full speed, then open the little hatch in the top of the blender to pour the whey into the swirling vortex of liquid. This insures an even distribution with no clumping.
If you’re going to be eating enough smoothies to buy protein supplements like this, buy a blender too.

Purchased this for my husband and he loves it. Great price and fast shipping. He said vanilla is amazing. It mixes very easily and tastes even better when blended with fruits. Taking casein protein before bed is important since most muscle rebuilding occurs while you sleep. My husband use to get sore the next day after tough workouts, but after taking casein before bed he did not get sore and he noticed faster strength gains. I would recommend this product, its amazing!

I rate this product five stars because of the quality of the protein. It can be a bit rough downing it when mixed with water. It tastes like a milk shake when mixed with a milk or soy milk. Keeps me full throughout the night and allows my muscles to recover from working out. If your concerned with taste, the cookies and cream (I think they only make that one in a 2lb) in my opinion was the best flavor. There are crunchy pieces of oreo in it!
